Lore
Cragborn tower over most folk and endure freezing gales without flinching. Their holds are cut into living stone and marked with trial-tattoos earned through work, rescue, and survival. They keep the "Song of the Earth Father" as both faith and law - an oral code that names which paths may be taken, which slopes must be shored, and which debts must be repaid in labor.
Homeland: Vuori (mountain spines and high passes; cliff-roads and carved holds).
Government: Carved-Moots led by Hearth-Chiefs, oath-scribes, and master-stonelayers. Decisions are slow, but final once etched into record-stone.
Society: Practical, disciplined, and reputation-driven. Cragborn crews measure worth by what you finish - bridges that hold, walls that do not crack, caravans that make it through. They are culturally allied with dwarves and often share joint work-camps on major projects.
Buildings: Tiered cliff-holds, stair-cities, wind-bridges, and gate-halls carved straight into granite. Sound-carrying oath chambers are common; public promises are meant to be heard.
Religion: The Song of the Earth Father (Zorosh). Cragborn speak of "listening to the mountain" and take omens from stone-shifts, fault-lines, and the steadiness of a laid foundation.
Law. Work-Oath and Pass-Right. A sworn contract is weight; hospitality is duty; cheating the measure is theft.
Cultural Taboo (Exile Crime). Weight-Lying - knowingly falsifying load, stone, or oath-measure in a way that endangers lives.
Trade:
• Export: precision stonework, load-bearing supports, bridge anchors, cliff-road hardware, gate mechanisms
• Import: grain, oils, cured foods, cloth, paper/ink for records
Lore & Background
The Cragborn did not choose the mountain. The mountain chose them, across enough generations that the distinction stopped mattering. Their holds are cut into living stone. Their law is carried in song. Their people are marked with trial-tattoos that document what they have done and what they have survived, publicly, on their skin. A Cragborn without tattoos is either very young or has not yet been tested. Both are considered temporary conditions.
Endurance is not a virtue to the Cragborn in the sense of something praised and rewarded. It is the baseline. What you do after enduring - what you build, what you complete, what you anchor - that is where worth gets measured.
Role in Aldaedro Society
Cragborn build the infrastructure the other Aldaedro peoples move through. Their cliff-roads, wind-bridges, and gate-halls connect highland communities across terrain that would otherwise be impassable. They do not govern territories so much as define them - the road that runs through Cragborn stone is Cragborn road, and what happens on it is subject to Cragborn law for as long as it stands.
They consider Giants their closest ancestral kin and treat them accordingly. Giants find this touching, and occasionally wish the formal acknowledgments were slightly less elaborate.
Social Structure & Upbringing
Each crag community is its own hold. Some are led by a Hearth-Chief, some by a council of master-stonelayers, some by an oath-scribe whose authority comes from being the keeper of the community's legal record. The Carved-Moot brings these voices together when decisions need to be made. Decisions are slow. Once etched into record-stone, they are final.
The Song of the Earth Father serves as both faith and law. It names which paths may be taken, which slopes must be shored, which debts must be repaid in labor. Singer-priests maintain the Song and train apprentices in it. An oath sung in the echo chamber has been heard by the Stone-Father. An oath on paper is a document. These are not treated as equivalent.
Cragborn children learn the Song before they learn anything else. Coming of age is the Carving - the young Cragborn cuts their personal mark into the community's oath-stone in front of the singer-priest and the master-stonelayers, and speaks the vow that names what they commit to contributing. The mark cannot be unmade. That is the point.
Appearance
Cragborn are stocky and exceptionally dense - shorter than Orcs, closer in height to large humans, but with a weight of bone and muscle that does not match what the eye expects. Their skin runs from deep grey to slate-brown to basalt-black, with the oldest bloodlines showing a solidity that people who touch them sometimes describe as feeling like worked stone. Trial-tattoos cover most of the body over a lifetime, each one a record of something proven.
They dress for durability and labor. Decoration is carved into tools, belts, and armor panels - worked in, not attached. The patterns are readable to other Cragborn and opaque to most outsiders. A Cragborn carrying a carved tool is carrying a document.
Religion: & Philosophy
The Stone-Father is Zorosh - the god of stone, oaths, and enduring things. Cragborn insist the Song predates the scholarship that mapped it to Zorosh, and they are not interested in the debate. What matters is that the Stone-Father hears what is sung in the echo chambers. Cragborn take omens from stone-shifts, fault-lines, and the steadiness of a laid foundation. They listen to the mountain because the mountain speaks, and they have spent long enough learning the language to understand what it says.
Relationships with Other Ancestries
The Druazer are the most natural partner - shared stone-craft tradition, shared comfort underground, centuries of adjacent work on major highland projects. The relationship is warm in the way that two peoples who argue about whose tradition invented something are warm. They both know the other well enough to know exactly where the friction is.
Giants are treated with reverence as ancestral kin. Mountain human communities built on Cragborn infrastructure maintain good relationships because they have learned what happens when they do not. Within the Aldaedro, Cragborn have little regular contact with Firbolg or Orcs but no friction with either. Different terrain, different concerns.
Raiders who collapse roads, fire-setters, and anyone who tries to seize a quarry by force are consistent enemies. Cragborn do not require political authorization to respond to an attack on their roads. The Carved-Moot ratifies it afterward.
Military Presence
Cragborn do not project force beyond their territory. What they have is an intimate knowledge of every approach, every chokepoint, and every passage through the holds they built. Fighting a Cragborn defense in stone they cut themselves is one of the more punishing experiences available to a conventional force, and the historical examples have become training cases in what to avoid.
They export precision stonework and cliff-road engineering that has military value other peoples find indispensable. A Cragborn-built bridge on a sealed schedule is a strategic asset. The Cragborn who built it knows how to seal it, and the price for that information is not included in the original contract.
Cultural Traits
What you finish. What holds. What you swore and whether it still stands. These are the measures a Cragborn community applies to everything and everyone, including itself. The Song of the Earth Father is the most honest expression of what that looks like over time - everything made and everything promised, held in voice and memory, passed forward to the people who will inherit what this generation built or failed to maintain.
Species Name. Zuraedor
Homeland: Vuori - crag-cities, basalt spines, old quarry-vales, mountain spines and high passes
Government: Carved-Moots led by Hearth-Chiefs, oath-scribes, and master-stonelayers. Decisions slow, but final once etched.
Law. Work-Oath and Pass-Right. A sworn contract carries weight. Hospitality is duty. Cheating the measure is theft.
Exile Crime. Weight-Lying - knowingly falsifying load, stone, or oath-measure in a way that endangers lives.
Export: Precision stonework, load-bearing supports, bridge anchors, cliff-road hardware, gate mechanisms
Import: Grain, oils, cured foods, cloth, paper and ink for records
Racial Allies: Druazer (Dwarves), select Giants of nearby Holds, mountain humans
Racial Enemies: Raiders who collapse roads, fire-setters, any power that seizes quarries by force
Religion: The Song of the Earth Father
Zorosh - named the Stone-Father. The Song is maintained by singer-priests and apprentices across generations. Oaths sung in echo chambers are binding in a way written contracts are not. The mountain is read for omen and guidance. The Song is older than the scholarship, and the Cragborn have no interest in arguing otherwise.
