Expanded Lore
Cow Folk are the heavy-shouldered tunnel guardians of the Aldaethu, known for patience until patience is betrayed. Their bodies follow bovid lines rather than human ones: broad muzzles, strong necks, horns of many shapes, dense coats, hoofed feet, and powerful hands suited to tools, shields, and rescue ropes. Bulls, cows, oxen, and younger calves are distinguished by horn shape, body mass, voice, coat pattern, and social role more than by human standards of beauty.
The Red Thread is the center of Chiaegut culture. In its oldest form it was a cord tied between miners entering a dangerous branch of stone; in its modern form it is a vow that every person who goes below returns if breath and strength remain. Red-thread knots mark rescue houses, oath-stones, funeral posts, and the doorways of families who have pulled strangers from collapsed tunnels.
Chiaegut communities prize calm strength. A raised voice is considered less impressive than a steady hand in darkness, and a warrior who can hold a shield line without panic earns more honor than one who charges first. Their maze-priests and rescue captains teach young Cow Folk to read echoes, dust, hoof vibration, air taste, and rope tension before they are trusted in the deep roads.
Their conflicts usually come from duty stretched too far. Chiaegut will negotiate with dwarven holds, goliath pass-clans, and even old rivals if lives are trapped below stone, but they have little mercy for trap guilds, tunnel raiders, or mine-lords who abandon workers for profit. Adventuring Cow Folk often leave home to repay a rescued life, recover a lost thread, hunt a collapsing-road saboteur, or prove that strength can protect without becoming cruelty.
