Lore & Background

Chiaegun are the Horse Folk of the Aldaethu. They are bipedal equine humanoids, not centaurs, with equine heads, manes, tails, powerful legs, and humanoid arms and hands.

Their herd-clans maintain routes that outsiders assume are simply luck: passes that do not flood, grassland cuts that avoid ambush, water points that do not dry, and roads that remain usable across changing seasons.

They keep way-shrines and stable posts and remember every road that ever failed.

Their place within the Grand Design is movement, endurance, and connection.

The Celestial Dragon gave each Aldaethu people a purpose. The Chiaegun believe theirs is to ensure distance does not separate the parts of that Design.

They carry:

messages

medicine

warnings

trade

diplomatic correspondence

route intelligence

emergency aid

Where Chiaegen runners excel at speed over short or difficult routes, Chiaegun excel at sustained travel across open country and established road networks.

Their culture values:

endurance

reliability

freedom of movement

route knowledge

promises kept

responsibility to carry the word

Their older cultural profile also establishes that their spirituality emphasizes journeys and vows, with roadside shrines where cords are retied to represent promises made and kept.

A common Chiaegun saying is:

A broken promise is heavier than a broken bone.

Appearance

Chiaegun are tall, lean humanoids with equine features.

Common traits include:

equine heads

long or short manes

expressive ears

tails

powerful digitigrade or horse-like legs

humanoid torsos

fully functional hands

Their coats may resemble many horse lineages:

black

bay

chestnut

grey

palomino

dun

roan

pinto

spotted

pale or near-white

Their normal form is always bipedal.

The separate Ancestral Form rule in the opening of the Reth ancestry documents allows them to take the form of a true horse through their shared transformation amulet. That transformation is not part of their individual ancestry-feature block.

Society

Chiaegun live in herd-clans and route communities across the Niityt grasslands.

Movement is normal within their culture.

Some communities remain near permanent waystations, while others travel between seasonal grazing lands, caravan routes, and trade roads.

Foals grow up learning:

landmarks

routes

water points

emergency signals

weather

distance

caravan discipline

how to recognize a road becoming unsafe

The older cultural profile says foals are raised in open plains camps where constant movement is ordinary.

The Sun-Road

The Sun-Road is one of the defining Chiaegun traditions.

It is not necessarily one single paved highway.

It is the accumulated network of:

safe passes

grassland routes

water points

way-shrines

relay stops

stable posts

known crossings

maintained through generations of Chiaegun route knowledge.

Their ancestry document specifically establishes that the Sun-Road continues to exist in part because of Chiaegun traditions.

Couriers and Relay Routes

Chiaegun are among the Aldaethu's primary terrestrial couriers.

They operate:

relay routes

messenger services

caravan guidance

emergency response

military communication

rapid transport

Their older cultural profile likewise establishes relay routes, courier service, outrider work, pursuit, and battlefield screening as major roles.

Warfare

Chiaegun are mobile warriors rather than static defenders.

They are especially suited to:

outrider work

screening

pursuit

rapid reinforcement

reconnaissance

message carrying

flanking

Their Charger's Strike reflects the same culture mechanically.

Older language describing them as "light cavalry" should be updated because they are no longer centaur-like. Their mobility comes from their own speed, route knowledge, and - when using the shared setting rule - their separate Ancestral Form.

Relationships

Cowfolk. provide reliable inns, food, and rest stops along Chiaegun routes.

Rabbitfolk. supply food and agricultural support along the road network.

Canine Folk. patrol and protect the same routes Chiaegun use.

Chiaegen. friendly rivals and partners in courier work.

Ratfolk. handle distribution once a message or shipment reaches a city.

Hippofolk. maintain bridges, canals, and crossings that keep the Sun-Road connected.

Elephantfolk. entrust Chiaegun couriers with treaties, rulings, and formal messages.

Bearfolk. rely on them for military communication and rapid warning.

Religion: and Philosophy

Chiaegun interpret the Grand Design through journey, connection, and fulfilled obligation.

The road is not sacred merely because people walk on it.

It is sacred because it joins people who would otherwise remain separated.

Their roadside shrines often involve cords tied or retied to symbolize promises.

The exact ritual details can remain local and varied.

Current Tensions

The most canon-consistent present problems are:

Broken Routes. The Long Shadow has made old roads less safe and less reliable.

Confederation Duty vs. Local Need. A courier may be ordered to carry a central message while a nearby settlement needs medicine or warning.

Road Neutrality. Chiaegun couriers increasingly face pressure to reveal, delay, or refuse politically sensitive messages.

Old Routes Failing. Some paths preserved for generations are no longer safe because of warfare, damaged bridges, changing weather, or abandoned settlements.

Chiaegun Adventurers

Courier. Carrying something too important for an ordinary messenger.

Lost Route. Searching for a vanished relay station or closed section of the Sun-Road.

Missing Messenger. A courier never reached the next waypoint.

Caravan Guide. Protecting travelers through dangerous territory.

Broken Promise. They failed to deliver something when it mattered.

Route Seeker. Searching for a new path to replace one that has failed.

Grand Design Pilgrim. Traveling beyond Niityt to understand what connection means outside their homeland.
