Druazer-Varjo
Duergar / Deep Dwarf
Homeland: Varjo (deep caverns, abandoned delves, and the outer edges of the Underdark roads).
Government: Hidden Syndics: small, hard councils that rule by necessity. Authority is kept quiet; public titles attract danger.
Society: Defensive and suspicious. They prefer controlled contact, strict entry rites, and hard bargains; survival is a discipline.
Buildings: Sealed stone doors, lightless corridors, sound-trap galleries, and shuttered trade halls where outsiders are always watched.
Trade:
Export: Rare ore salvage, black-stone craft, underground maps (selectively sold)
Import: Surface foodstores, lamp oils, rope, medicine, clean metalwork
Expanded Lore
Druazer-Varjo (Duergar / Deep Dwarf) are Druazer dwarves shaped by Varjo: deep roads, boundary tunnels, dim waystations, and shadowed redoubts. Children of stone and craft, they measure a life by what it can bear: a bridge, an oath, a family name, or a hall that keeps standing after its maker is gone. In their lands, daily life is tested by scarcity, secrecy, ambush, and the temptation to mistake caution for cruelty, so their children are taught vigilance, quiet mercy, and survival without needless suspicion before they are taught pride.
Appearance & Bearing
Most carry compact powerful builds, broad hands, dense beards or braided hair, and practical clothing marked by clan craft. Local stone, weather, and work leave visible traces in skin tones, jewelry, tools, and armor. Among the Druazer-Varjo (Duergar / Deep Dwarf), local signs matter: a travel cord, clan clasp, road token, tool scar, weather charm, or festival mark can tell another native where someone was raised and what duties their household claims. Outsiders often notice the surface first, but the people themselves read posture, workmanship, and how a person treats shared supplies.
Society: & Daily Life
Their households are work-lines as much as bloodlines. Apprenticeship, marriage, adoption, and oath-service can all bind a person into a hold, but a broken oath can push even kin to the edge of the hall. Their settlements are built around practical trust. Food stores, watch rotations, guest rights, tool access, and emergency shelters are treated as civic matters, not private conveniences. A respected elder is not simply old; they are someone whose decisions have kept others alive through a hard season.
Traditions & Tensions
Druazer stories favor patient victories. the gate held one more hour, the tunnel measured correctly, the bargain honored when profit argued otherwise. The Druazer-Varjo (Duergar / Deep Dwarf) keep festivals, tests, and initiation customs tied to their homeland: routes walked at dawn, names spoken before a witness stone, shared meals in dangerous weather, craft trials, rescue drills, or nights spent keeping watch while others sleep. Their greatest tensions usually come from outsiders who want their roads, secrets, tools, or shelter without accepting the obligations that make those gifts possible.
Adventurers
Adventurers from this culture often leave home as oath-bearers, scouts, debt-keepers, apprentices, guards, messengers, or reluctant witnesses to a problem the elders cannot solve from within the settlement. Many carry a small token of home and a larger burden: prove the old ways can survive contact with a changing world.
