Lore & Background
Varjo - The Vigil Court
Varjo Druthal inhabit the hidden roads and deep places associated with Osheth and the Underdark.
Their oldest responsibilities concern:
concealed routes
buried places
forbidden archives
shadowed crossings
deep passage
dangerous knowledge
The Varjo Court carries one of the heaviest cultural burdens among the Druthal because later ages repeatedly confused darkness with corruption.
Varjo tradition insists that they are not the same.
Darkness may mean:
rest
concealment
burial
privacy
depth
protection
Corruption is something else.
That distinction is spiritually and politically important.
Knowledge and Secrecy
Varjo Druthal do not believe all knowledge should be destroyed simply because it is dangerous.
Nor do they believe everything should be public.
Their culture developed around the question:
Who needs to know this, and what happens if they do?
That makes them valuable as:
archivists
route-keepers
diplomats of deep places
wardens of restricted knowledge
It also makes others suspicious of them.
Relationship with the Aldaegel
Goblin and other Aldaegel communities occupy many of the same deep roads and threshold spaces.
Relations: vary from cooperation to territorial tension.
Varjo Druthal generally understand that living near an underdark route does not automatically make that route theirs.
Modern Varjo Identity
Varjo culture values restraint, controlled trust, and disciplined secrecy.
Their greatest virtue is knowing when to close a door.
Their greatest danger is becoming so accustomed to withholding that they forget when a door should be opened.
